Short-term and long-term compensation after a car accident

On Behalf of | Sep 4, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

If you are involved in a car accident, you may suffer significant injuries, and they could all be related back to someone else’s negligence. Maybe another driver was on their cellphone, so they did not see the light turn red. They ran the red light, T-boned your vehicle, and put you in the hospital. As a result, they are responsible for the injuries that you suffered.

After the crash, you may want to look into your legal options to seek compensation. This can start with some of your short-term costs. You had to endure significant pain and suffering. You had to pay emergency bills when you were taken to the hospital or given an emergency surgery and other treatment options. If it took time to recover, you likely lost wages at work. Money that you expected to earn has been lost forever, and the other driver may owe you compensation.

The long-term costs

However, the above is only the beginning. You also want to think about the long-term costs, as ignoring these could mean that you leave significant amounts of compensation on the table.

For example, are you going to need physical therapy, future surgeries, in-home care or other types of medical treatment? Do you have a lifelong disability that is going to make it impossible for you to work? You may deserve compensation for a reduced earning capacity and your long-term medical and healthcare needs. Even something like pain and suffering could extend to be a long-term issue, such as if you suffer a spinal cord injury that will give you pain and discomfort for the rest of your life, even after you recover.

It is important to seek full compensation from the responsible driver, so be sure you know what legal steps to take.
