Report: Most wrong-way accidents caused by drunk drivers

On Behalf of | Jan 27, 2026 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Over the last few years, there has been an increase in wrong-way accidents. These can be some of the most dangerous accidents, especially when they happen on the interstate. Vehicles are traveling at a very high rate of speed, and drivers on the interstate do not expect to see traffic coming toward them, so they may not be prepared to actively avoid a crash.

What studies have found is that most of these car accidents are caused by drunk drivers and alcohol impairment. After all, the interstate was specifically designed to avoid these issues. In the vast majority of cases, outside of construction zones, traffic does not share the same lanes. It is divided by medians, concrete barriers, and other such devices and all traffic moves in the same direction.

It is very hard for a sober driver to accidentally get on the interstate in the wrong direction, but an impaired driver may make that type of mistake because they are simply not thinking clearly.

Are there any other potential reasons?

Yes, there are other reasons why these accidents may happen. For instance, perhaps an elderly driver is experiencing the cognitive decline often associated with degenerative brain conditions as they grow older. Or perhaps a young driver is inexperienced, and they just get confused when trying to take an on-ramp.

Outside of the interstate, the issue could sometimes come down to a GPS unit. If the software has not been updated properly and road systems have been changed, a city street may have been changed from a two-way into a one-way street. It is theoretically possible that the GPS could still instruct a driver to turn the wrong direction since the software is outdated.

However, in most cases, the main culprit is alcohol. Those who have suffered injuries in accidents caused by impaired drivers need to know how to seek appropriate financial compensation.
